Flood Risk Mitigation

Flooding is one of the most frequent and costly hazards in North Carolina. Mitigation efforts, which include preventive measures ranging from infrastructure development to land use planning, are a cost-efficient solution to rising flood risks. North Carolina’s state agencies provide funding, technical assistance, and hands-on support to protect state waterways and mitigate flooding hazards. The state is also increasing its resiliency to flooding through planning and implementing mitigation actions. Learn more about these efforts.

NC Flood Mitigation Projects

The NC Flood Mitigation Projects Map highlights some of the state’s efforts to minimize flood risk in recent years. The map shows where state agencies have provided funding, technical assistance or direct implementation support for flood mitigation. Developed with the support of multiple state agencies, the map aims to increase the transparency of state flood mitigation efforts and assist with project coordination.

The map will be regularly updated to incorporate more flood resiliency projects and include a wider variety of water quality and stream management projects.

More information about flood hazards and funding for mitigation activities is available via the NC Resilience Exchange Funding Database.
